The concept of Escentric Molecules is certainly an intriguing one, Molecule 01 being the poster child of their cutting edge, modern take on perfume. It is white lab coats meet hype (including the celebrity kind) and a little bit of hocus pocus. The perfumer responsible for Molecule 01, Geza Schoen, is a genius. Whether this title is for his minimalist creations or marketing panache is entirely up to your olfactory senses and/or willingness to shell out a small fortune for the privilege of dousing yourself in a common, inexpensive ingredient (Iso E Super) suspended in perfuming alcohol.
Some noses report violets, ozone, lightening (does this even have a smell?), amber or musk, however cedar seems to be the popular consensus. Others cry 'snake oil', claiming to detect no scent at all which is odd considering Iso E Super, the solitary note in this fragrance, is used frequently in modern mainstream perfumery to deliver the smooth, amber and woody notes or the 'velvet' sensation of a scent. It is said to adapt to the chemistry of the wearer, smelling differently on each person. An individual fragrance, if you will.
My thoughts on this perfume? I love it. I detect sweet sawdust, a nuance of amber and something I can't place. Old books come to mind. On my boyfriend (this is a unisex scent) I smell what I can only describe as sexy potpourri (I didn't think such a possibility credible either, but there you go). The 'sexy' part could be chalked up to Iso E Super being something of a amplifier to one's natural pheromones (which have a strong influence on people attracting and repelling each other).
Despite my experience in liking Molecule 01, I can't help but feel duped. Much like the anti-art movement that saw Marcel Douchamp exhibiting a urinal as art, are Escentric Molecules pissing in the urinal of perfumery with their anti-perfumes? Best keep Brian Eno unadvised seeing as he is - to date, or at least known to date - the only successful person to use Douchamp's exhibit for its purpose.
Have you tested this perfume? I am very intrigued to know what notes you detected on yourselves and others.
